I stumbled across a great mobile phone software site the other day by accident. Come to think of it, I can't even remember what I was looking for in the first place. It may have been because my wife is currently looking to replace her cellphone, and I was looking to see which brand and model cellphone is the easiest to unlock from any prior network.
First of all, I don't trust people who sell phones on eBay that are already unlocked. I can't help but feel I am aiding the trade in stolen phones somehow. So, time to learn how to unlock a phone on my own. Surely there are sites out there (probably set up by the same groups that pinch the phones en mass, but anyhow) that I can find codes that can do this right?
Well, that is probably how I stumbled across this site. Loaded with lots of free cellphone software, I started browsing through the extensive list, looking for anything that took my interest. By and large, the list was full of boredom buster type applications to play while on the long bus or train trip to work, but then I noticed super bluetooth hack...
If you haven't heard about Super Bluetooth Hack, or bluetooth hacking in general, perhaps if I remind you of the cellphone pictures of a very naked Paris Hilton that surfaced on the internet not so long ago. The story goes that someone managed to get within bluetooth range of the hotel heiress and her cell, and stole the pictures from it, as she had her bluetooth switched on.
I downloaded the application to see just what it could do, and tested it on my wife's LG U860. Sure enough, I could transfer across text messages, browse and download gallery images and even control the phone remotely! This is a scary prospect. It means once someone has access to your phone via bluetooth, they can place calls to other people from their phone, while you foot the bill. (It is possible to send text messages also, but why bother when each message is logged, and the phone call is not traceable)
There are also other apps out there that scan phones and report back on the various security issues inherent with that make or model... which a lot like securing your own ecommerce website by trying to hack it, should be run on your own phone first to see what you are vulnerable to.
The short term solution to staying safe... turn off bluetooth on your phone!
